High protein diets are still in vogue. However, enriching your diet with protein is not without consequences on your health.

Your body can no longer find enough lipids and carbohydrates for its proper functioning, it must try to use excess protein to survive. What are the benefits and risks of one of the top diets? Let’s do a check in!

A low calorie diet rich in protein

In a high-protein diet, the principle is simple: it is to eat only ingredients rich in protein, but also low in calories, the intake of fats and sugars being almost zero.

By creating this  lack  within the body, you will force it to draw its energy from its reserves and thus burn stored fat, while preserving muscle capital. This diet is based on a list of protein foods: fish, seafood, eggs, lean meats, lean dairy products, with the addition of some  vegetables , which will take care of providing mineral salts and vitamins. Some diets include   protein meal sachets . During this program, it is strongly recommended to take  vitamin and mineral supplements , as well as  fiber , generally in the form of oat bran, in order to limit deficiencies.

The « yoyo » effect

The major and indisputable advantage of this program is the  result : you really lose weight, and quickly! From the first days, results can already be seen, which is extremely motivating. Because of this very rapid weight loss, the body may be tempted to regain all the pounds it has lost, or even more. We have received this as a heritage from our ancestors, who are frequently subjected to periods of  scarcity : the body reacts to deprivation by burning fewer calories and by storing more when resuming a so-called normal diet. At the end of the diet, the « yoyo » effect  is to be feared. This is why it is not recommended for people prone to weight variations of this type.

Kidney complications

High protein diets can also cause kidney complications   because the excess protein puts a lot of strain on our kidneys. It is therefore imperative to drink plenty of water during this period. They can also cause breath problems , due to the consumption of too much protein.

Constipation and decreased immunity

These diets induce a number of inconveniences which, on a daily basis, will handicap you. The  constipation  is prominently. This deteriorates the intestinal walls. Weakened, the mucous membranes no longer make it possible to counter pathogens, which attack our body more effectively. So it’s a serious drop in  the immune system .

An increased cancer threat

The nutrients found in fruits and vegetables are known to lower the risk of developing carcinogenic tumors, which is why, by opting for a high protein diet, we increase our risk of developing  cancer , especially of the  colon .

Another problem: this diet recommends replacing sugar, which is high in calories, with aspartame . However, this famous chemical sweetener is also known to be  carcinogenic!

Risks of premature death

In one study, scientists observed cases of volunteers having symptoms of cardiovascular disease  . For 5 years, they measured the level of protein consumed by the volunteers. Results? The subjects who ate the most protein gained 10% more weight and had a 59% risk of dying during the study compared to those who ate little. For researchers, high protein diets are useful for short term weight loss   but should be avoided for too long …
